Labels

A new business model for the music industry of today

If you are a “traditional” record label then now is the time to take specialist advice on how best to change your business model to suit the music industry of today. With declining physical record sales and widespread digital piracy, it’s more important than ever that you share in artists’ publishing, merchandising, sponsorship and live income to continue to make your business viable. There’s no two ways about it, this is the way forward and we have helped numerous labels in this challenging transition from old school music business to become 21st Century entertainment companies.

360-degree business model

How best to develop so called “360” rights and on what terms is the key. It’s a very emotive and complex issue as there is not an industry custom in this area. But there are many ways to successfully achieve this; let us show you the options and advise you on the best for your business.

We can review and update or (if necessary) replace your existing agreements to ensure they are adequate, fully compliant and suitable to the income streams now available in the new music business.

Once you have made a choice lLS will provide you with a new set of suitable template agreements tailored specifically for your needs. We can negotiate your first 360 deal in consultation with you and thereafter you will have the tools and knowledge to carry out your own contract negotiations going forward. Alternatively, if you prefer and have a budget for this, you can let us act as your external legal and business affairs department.

Business and Legal Affairs Services

We at ILS also act as the out-of-house legal and business affairs department of numerous independent record labels across all genres. We can review your existing documents to make sure they are up-to-date with industry trends and we can supply you with a set of easy-to-use template agreements. We can tailor them for specific deals and expertly advise you and negotiate with third parties in full consultation with you.

You can pay an agreed fee or take the benefit of the ILS Scheme for a reduced rate.

We are extremely pro-active in seeking opportunities for our clients throughout our associated network of suppliers (e.g. distribution, sync licensing. publishing, library music, licensing partners and live events). ILS fees are usually around 5% of what we make for clients in procured deals.

Funding

We are experts in the area of funding music projects and can carry out a funding review for you. We advise on the potential avenues open to you such as grant funding (e.g. PRS Foundation), investment funds, banks, venture capital, fan-funded schemes and P&D deals

ILS has devised a novel and simple way for existing independent labels to offer an investment opportunity to investors, fans and suppliers to invest in their business in return for a cut of the profits .
